Satisfying the Blogging Soul

So I have been “missing in action” for quite some time now and my email is filled with a million blog posts I have read. Where was I? Busy with work; worked on weekends, almost over 12 hours a day and a fever and terrible ache to realize that I should have taken a breather way earlier!

So, where did blogging go between all this chaos? Blogging took a backseat; yes, nothing social with the social media in the past 2 weeks, and that huge three digit number saying “Unread Emails”.

So, what better to make a “comeback” and talk about what makes us happy – Blogging Wise?

QUANTITY, QUALITY….

Long ago, when I started blogging (when was that, a million years back?) I wrote about how numbers judged us. And that holds true for blogging. I mean ranks, comments, clicks, statistics, shares, tweets, followers… it is all the number game. But what number makes you happy? Is a two digit number good enough or does that 3 digit numbers makes it worth all the effort? Personally, if a post of mine crosses 50 I go like “Wow, what have I done to get that number” but then I see people like Bill Dorman getting about 400 comments and then it is like “Ok, so I am not Bill Dorman great”. Or people like Danny Brown who seem to kick a#* with every post! But then, for the lesser blogging mortals… are there a particular number that leaves us all drooling… in good sense of course.

CONNECTIONS

These past two weeks, completely unplugged from all the media, one person gets in touch and asks what’s wrong. That is why he gets so many pretty mentions here – Bill Dorman, the darling of the blogging ladies. But it makes you feel good. A person who you probably have never said hi to… except virtually of course; the only constant connection is posts and tweets, somehow notices that you have gone “missing”. That is what makes it worthwhile. When I recently went self-hosted; there are so many who got in touch and asked whether I needed help and were ready to walk me through the whole process. And there was no mention of paying up; yes, all that help for good blogging relationships.

So, what is that is making the blogging worthwhile? How is your blogging soul satisfied?

  • Joy

I’ll be honest, numbers do make me happy.  Now as to which numbers exactly, I have not been that ‘conscious’.  I don’t check analytics that regularly though I think I need to do that more seriously if I’m thinking of taking this to the next level.  The question is, do I really want to? I’m not sure either. Meaningful comments satisfy my soul and normally having more than 10 makes me quite happy.  More than the number of followers, to me it’s the meaningful comments that really count.  Anyway, I hope you are feeling better now and take it easy.  We all go through these super busy periods and we just make the most of what we have.  :-)

    • http://billdorman.me Bill Dorman

I too like the meaningful comments and like to reply in kind. However, it takes more time to do so but I’m ok with that because also like you I am more interested in the quality, not the numbers per se.

      • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

For a person who gets big number comment count, you are pretty modest ;)

    • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

      Hey Joy,

Thanks for being truthful! Numbers do make me happy too. The comment count more than all actually! The more the comments the more it means people are reading what I taken so much pains to write!  ;)

But yes, meaningful comments, that is what makes it even more worthwhile!

I am feeling a lot better, but just finding way less time to catch up on blogging so feeling kind of left out about that! How did the shifting and unpacking go? will head over to your blog to find out more about what happened!

Take care! Hope you have a lovely weekend!

  • http://scattered-joy-blog.blogspot.com Kara

I claim that blogging is all about flexing my writing muscle and finding “my voice”, but mostly it’s the lure of finding an audience for my work that entices me.  Making friends along the way has been an added bonus.  So, since I’m being honest here, I’ll admit the higher the numbers, the happier I am.

    • http://billdorman.me Bill Dorman

I’m still searching for my ‘voice’ but have noticed the difference when I read earlier posts of mine. An audience provides some validation, but I try not to let that be my sole focus.

I think if you focus on the relationship and engagement part, everything else will take care of itself.

      • http://scattered-joy-blog.blogspot.com Kara

When I say “numbers”, I’m talking about the number of people who read my posts.  When it comes to comments, it’s not the number of comments that matter to me, but the interaction with others that I value.  I agree, engagement is everything.

    • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

      Hey Kara,

So true, the numbers are always a wonderful way to get the happy feel of a bigger audience! But yes, friends that keep in touch make it even more worthwhile to go through all that  ”pain”!

  • http://billdorman.me Bill Dorman

Did you say ‘Bill Dorman great’? I might have to frame that…………..:). Trust me my dear, don’t use me as a measuring stick. Obviously I’m doing something to keep an audience but I truly have so many holes in my game it makes me wonder if all of this is sustainable. You are doing a fantastic job and you have a great community.

My focus is simple and I’m more interested in relationships than anything else. I might be naive, but I feel if I take care of that everything else will fall into place.

Thanks for the mentions, it’s kind of fun to see your name in lights at times; just hopefully it’s not a mugshot………..

Hopefully things have settled down now and you will be back for a little while. Have a great day.

    • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

      Yes Bill,

I did say that becuase your amazing networking skills and even more worthy “conversational” skills is case study worthy! Really, I ain’t being the buttery kind, you are lovely! :)

Thanks so much but I hope I can be half as amazing as you are… battle won!

Do frame it! I might not be this kind always! I am a girl, I can get nasty (Big Grin!)

Things are settled but blogging has taken a back seat…hopefully, I can get back sooner than I think I would!

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

  • http://twitter.com/MyRivendell Bonnie Copeland

So glad you are back, I for one miss your posts!  Interesting comment about the numbers Hajra, I am the same as you..excited if I get a over my average of about 40 hits a day and about 10 comments on a decent day.  I clearly am not Bill Doorman great yet either lol.  You know though, I don’t think we should compare to anyone else except our past selves.  I have made gains and as long as that keeps happening I will be content.
Sometimes the posts that get the most activity really surprise me.  I love the writing, getting my thoughts out and shared but what really makes it feel super great is when I get an email from someone telling me how much it meant to them.  This has happened only twice but wow…what a feeling!
You work on getting some balance back in your life and feel better!

    • Anonymous

I know that guy, trust me, he’s not that great…………..

Just have fun with it and keep engaging, everything else will work out.

      • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

Oh really, we girls just seem to love him!

      • http://twitter.com/MyRivendell Bonnie Copeland

LOL thats not what I hear!  Thanks for the encouragement though.  :)

    • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

      Hey Bonnie,

Thanks so much sweets! I could have cried on the comment… you are such a lovely girl!
I have got an email just once saying how much fun they had reading my post and one person actually emailed me saying he hates my posts and I shouldn’t be writing at all; so that kind of balanced out the happy feeling I had! ;)

But yes, improvement over the past self is always noteworthy and makes one feel glad!

Thanks for stopping by Bonnie! You are awesome!

      • http://twitter.com/MyRivendell Bonnie Copeland

Interesting thing about hate..it’s a very strong emotion. What you can take from that my dear friend is that no matter what he liked or didn’t like..you made him think and feel.  HA! THAT is what writing is about isnt’ it?  Who cares if they agree! lol  Mind you I suggest you ignore the ugly..that is a reflection upon the person who writes it.

Have a great weekend Hajra…keep on being fabulous!

  • Muriel

I love blogging. I think it’s therapeutic, and I like receiving feedback from my posts. I am also dreaming of writing a book on what it feels to be French in London. My blog allows me to test the waters…

    • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

The book fever sure is getting around! Please do… a french in London that will be fun to read in a novel form!

  • Vishnu

I think what makes blogging worthwhile is being able to share your voice with the world. While I have not yet started posting, I’ve seen many wonderful bloggers share their life, stories and souls with the world through blogging. good post Hajra (or Bill!?!)

    • Anonymous

We are one and the same, you have never seen a picture of us together, have you?

I hijacked her post for some reason; probably because she was kind enough to mention me. I’m a sucker for attention………….:)

      • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

We should get one clicked… come over to Dubai!

    • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

      Hey Vishnu,

For a blogger who hasn’t been writing you are seen around quite often!
Thank Bill, he is the one who sent a tweet and inspired the post! And yes, mention Bill and the post becomes famous instantly!

  • http://twitter.com/Penelopemuses Penelope James

You spoke to me, and to many other bloggers, when you said how after blogging had to take a backseat, you had a three-digit number in your inbox. That’s precisely what is happening to me, more and more, though because of work rather than illness or holidays.

Without a doubt, what has made blogging worthwhile for me is to form relationships with other bloggers. I used to care about my stats but now I care more for my community of bloggers and some, in particular, who have become personal friends, such as Bill Dorman is for you.

    • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

      Hey Penelope,

Work is becoming quite a trouble for many it seems! Hope things get back to the required pace for you too. Me too, I did care about numbers and somewhere I still do, but the amazing sense of community is so enriching and fulfilling that it makes everything else lesser in impact!

@bdorman264:disqus is everyone’s favorite; visit his blog and find out why! Soon, you will be all in awe of him too!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

The one singular thing that made every blog I’ve written so far was the email from Anna, the 14 year old Hodgkin’s survivor who shared with me that reading my posts helped her during her recovery.  The hundreds of hours spent learning to blog, upload posts, get the word out, help other bloggers get read, twitter, tweetdeck, market suite…every single step (my first blog post took me THREE hours to write and upload) was worth it knowing that a cancer survivor was helped.  So it was even more wonderful when she and her mother agreed to an interview…one of my favorite posts to do.  Helping others is what makes it mean the most to me….and, of course, all the wonderful blogging friends I’ve met along the way.

    • Anonymous

Wow, that would make everything you have ever done worthwhile in that one e-mail response. What a great story.

      • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

You should visit Tambre blog and read Anna’s story; it was one of the best pieces ever!

    • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

Oh yes, I loved how Anna shared her story with you! That was so moving.

Your blog is very noble in its cause and intention, there is no denying that. I think every post of yours is an inspiration for those fighting the cancer battle. We are very proud of you Tambre! You are just plain fantastic and have a heart of gold!

  • Maureen Hunter

Glad youre back Hajra. I never look at the numbers that closely. I guess for me my blogging soul is satisfied by every little bit of feedback I get that says “that made a difference, that inspired me” – if I can combine my creativity with doing that then I’m in soul heaven

Welcome back Hajra. I have been on hiatus for sometime. Been doing more offline marketing and have not been online or blogging.  Learning to find a happy balance between both being online and offline.  My blogging soul gets satisifed by reviewing comments from readers and learning from one another.

I hope you are feeling better Hajra, I know how we can get so busy that we forget about stuff like, health or even eating.  In fact, I watched a motivational video today by Sean Walters, Focused on Results… it truly makes you think about success and what we put ourselves through.

Blogging for me started out to be a struggle, a huge mountain that I thought I would never get over.  But instead, I not only got over that mountain, I am happy to keep going because there are so many people, like you Hajra, that I get to meet.  We learn, grow, share, and just have fun.  So I would say my blogging soul today, is very happy!  Thanks for asking  :)

    Hi Hajra,

That’s tough to work and maintain a blog as well as you do.  I’m lucky enough to run a blog as part of my job duties, and I couldn’t imagine being able to do this in the few non work hours I have.

    Hope you are doing well,

    Bryce

    • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

      Hey Bryce,

Lol… I do a very bad job of maintaining it! But doing it for work will have me a little worried all the time maybe! Keeping up to the schedule and all… how do you manage that?

I am better, thanks so much! It was lovely having you stop by!

  • http://www.wonderoftech.com Carolyn Nicander Mohr

Hi Hajra, I had been wondering what was up with you. Sorry I didn’t reach out, but we all can’t be “Bill Dorman great”. ;-) I know you have been busy with your new job but I do hope all else is well, my dear.

I truly try not to be affected by numbers. It’s a double edged sword. Alexa can be a dear friend or a cursed enemy. But what really motivates me is when I read that my blog helped others. A comment that I read about my blog on another website was from a reader whose parents had been trying to get their farm in a local co-op for years. She read my article on Locavore and within hours her parents were in a co-op. I write to help people so when I discover that has happened, I feel very motivated.

I hope you’re back in the blogging world soon, Hajra. I speak for the entire world when I say, “We miss you!”

    • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

      Hey Carolyn,

I was super busy and still am; just finding weekend to be in the blogging world! But yes, I did try my best to vote for you everyday! Did you win it?

I hate alexa..mainly because it shows me bad numbers; but I ain’t affected by it also. If I have readers wondering where I was and what I am doing, then alexa can do what she wants! I loved the story you shared with us! You have truly been a joy to have around in the blogging world!

You guys are just awesome! I might cry soon after reading these comments! Thanks so much! :)

      • http://www.wonderoftech.com Carolyn Nicander Mohr

Hi Hajra, No, I didn’t win the contest, but it wasn’t from lack of support. Thank you very much for voting for me. The support I received meant so much more to me than the contest.

You have helped others so much with your blog and in so many other ways. I love seeing you back here! :-)

        I hope you’re having a super weekend.

        • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

Oh..too bad but never mind! Next time, we will try even harder!

  • http://twitter.com/AmeenaFalchetto Ameena Falchetto

It’s the quality of the comments that keeps me going, it’s the DM’s, the emails which, sometimes roll in weeks or months later thanking me, that keep me going. Just knowing that something I wrote touched someone, helped them and inspired them is what keeps it all worthwhile.

Numbers don’t really impress me to be honest … nor do comments like “Great post” Glad you are back – the time out really does make a difference!!!

    • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

      Hey Ameena,

You are a rock star! Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the conversation up a notch! Inspiring and helping someone through writing may probably be one of the most satusfying things ever and combine that for the love of blogging and win win it is!

Time out makes a whole of a difference, not only to the blog but to the zillion amazing conversations I somehow miss!

Thanks so much for stopping by Ameena! It is great having you here!

  • http://ivebecomemyparents.com/ I’ve Become My Parents

Nice to have you back! It’s hard when “life” gets in the way of our passions, eh?

Indeed, I’d much rather have 5 meaningful comments that show the person has really read my post than 20 “Nice post” comments. Having said that, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that a bigger, more engaged audience makes me happier, so I do look at the numbers and constantly strive for more.

    Cheers!

    • http://hajrakvetches.com Hajra

      Hey,

Yes, it does become tough. I am amazed how people blog so often with a day job! :)

Ya, its kind of like a two edged sword… what do we want, more comments or quality? Tough choice!

  • http://www.whatlittlethings.com Samantha Bangayan

I’ve got to admit that I look at the numbers too, but it’s always quality over quantity. When a post really reaches out to people and they have a lot to say/share about it — that’s what makes it really valuable. =)

As many have said, the relationships are what make blogging worthwhile. And beyond the relationships, the discussion and the encouragement to reflect with others. That’s what I love about blogging! =)

P.S. Bill Dorman, you’re my hero too. =)

  • http://www.marianneworley.com Marianne Worley

    Hi Hajra,

I also “went missing” recently, well, sort of. I had mentioned to quite a few online friends that I would be going on a family vacation to Hawaii–my first in more than 2 years. Although I did take my laptop, I did not read any blogs, write any posts, or check in on Twitter or Facebook. I did check my email, but I only read the ones related to the new work project I received shortly before I went out of town.

Like many vacations, even the amazing ones, you feel like you need another vacation when you return. So, I decided to continue my social media sabbatical for a few additional days to focus on work. Sometimes, you have to put certain parts of your life on pause while you tend to other things. I figured out that I had to stop feeling guilty about not commenting or posting enough. I think we both had a similar experience. I’ve also been planning my “comeback”–now I just need to write the darned post! ;-)
